R+HEATSHIELD Radiant Barrier Insulation
Available in Solid or Perforated Roll
R+HEATSHIELD is Innovative Energy's line of radiant barrier insulation products made from a strong woven polyethylene material covered by a metalized film. This metalized film provides a reflective surface that blocks 95 percent of radiant heat, so it helps keep spaces cooler in summer and warmer in winter at an affordable cost. The perforated option of R+HEATSHIELD can be ideal for an attic space as it allows the spaces to breathe, while still dramatically improving thermal performance and energy efficiency of your building. This keeps energy costs lower and interior spaces more comfortable. Our material is puncture and tear resistant, and can act as a moisture barrier in the solid option. R+HEATSHIELD is a popular choice in climates that are warm all year round. See our installation guides below, or call in to answer more questions.
What's the difference?
There are a couple differences between a radiant heat barrier and a reflective insulation product.
One difference involves the materials’ ability to be used as a moisture barrier. Our reflective insulation products can be installed to serve as a moisture barrier. In certain applications, it would be beneficial to create a more breathable space, which is why we offer the R+HEATSHIELD in a perforated option.
A second difference relates to the R value of the products. In some applications you might be looking for an added R value that a reflective insulation can provide. The radiant barrier, R+HEATSHIELD is a more affordable product used to block radiant heat in applications where an additional R value is not needed.
A third difference relates to the way in which it is installed. Reflective insulations are typically installed within cavities that incorporate air spaces between the insulation and the cavity materials, as in a wall. Radiant barrier insulation is typically installed with one reflective surface facing a large open air space, which makes it ideal for insulating an attic.
Our SCIF Barrier is a solid material with reflective foil on both sides. It meets the requirements for Sensitive Compartmented Facilities (SCIF) applications, proving an effective attenuation barrier against a wide range of RF frequencies.
- Cuts energy consumption and costs
- Improves interior comfort
- An economical radiant barrier attic insulation
- Effective means of temperature control in a wide variety of applications
- Solid version qualifies as an air and moisture barrier
- Superior tear and puncture resistance
- Can span eight feet unsupported
- Environmentally safe and non-toxic
- Lightweight; easy and safe to install
R+HEATSHIELD - Woven polyethylene film sandwiched between two layers of metalized film.
Available in solid or perforated rolls. Use the perforated version when placing directly on top of mass insulation in attic spaces or as a building wrap; use the solid version in all applications where an air or moisture barrier is needed.
R+HEATSHIELD White - White woven polyethylene film on one side, metalized aluminum film on other side. The white side provides a clean, bright finish. This product qualifies as an air barrier.
R+HEATSHIELD SCIF BARRIER - A solid material, reflective on both sides, it increases sound attenuation for SCIF applications.

Stapled Under Roof Rafters
Staple solid R+HEATSHIELD from the ridge board down to the eave or horizontally across the rafters, whichever is easier. If ridge venting is used, staple right to the ridge board. If other roof and/or gable venting is used, leave a 2" opening below the ridge board and above the floor joists as shown to prevent trapping heated air. Never block any venting with R+HEATSHIELD.
Over Crawlspaces or Unfinished Basements
Staple solid R+HEATSHIELD along the bottom of the floor joists. Tape all joints with appropriate tape for a vapor barrier. In Northern climates be aware that the winter temperature in the basement or crawlspace will drop considerably.
Over Purlins and Girts
Staple or tape to the ridge board of post-frame or steel buildings and pull down to the eave. The extra strength of R+HEATSHIELD easily withstands heavy use. Overlap R+HEATSHIELD 2" and fasten roof and side panels over it.
Under Trusses
R+HEATSHIELD can span up to eight feet unsupported. Use heavy-duty staples every 8" - 10", or tapping screws every 12" to 16". The superior strength of R+HEATSHIELD will support 3" to 5" of fiberglass insulation laid on top, if desired. Space fasteners every 6" when supporting added insulation.
Over Joists Under Roof Sheathing
Lay R+HEATSHIELD over rafters allowing it to “drape†several inches. Staple as necessary to hold in place until roof sheathing is fastened down. The air space created by draping will reflect downward heat intrusion, while the bottom side will stop heat transfer with its low emittance surface. The same effect occurs, but in reverse, in the winter months to stop heat loss
